Genebase.com: Searching for the ancestors

Searching for the ancestors

Its been a few weeks now since my quest for enlightenment has began. With the knowledge of one name which gave birth to yet another name, I am proud to say that it seems as if I have found the original Newrys. Details as to who they were and how they came to the Bahamas are still ambiguous, nevertheless. It seems thus far that two branches of Newrys exists and thrive within these islands of the Bahamas. However, that does not omit the possible fact that more branches may be out there waiting to be discovered.

Thus far, it seems as if the all the Newrys in the Bahamas are the decendents of either James or Simeon Newry. I have yet to prove that they are actually brothers. However, both men appear to have the same father, i.e. James Newry (the supposed, original Newry). I have found death certificates for both James and Simeon Newry, (information furnished by a distant cousin, (Derek Newry) who himself have been actively researching the Newry clan.

Both James and Simeon were farmers. They both were burried in St. Mathew’s Grave Yard. The search for their grave markings have proven fruitless. St. Mathew’s Church and its grave yard is centuries old, however, numerous graves lay there unmarked, destroyed and in ruins. I fear my forefathers tombs like their bodies have been made into dust and have been sentenced to blow in the wind.

Nevertheless, I live in hope. For since the inception of my quest, my knowledge about my regal yet humble family have been enriched. No longer does their exists any ambiguity as to who I am and how I am related to the next of kin. I now see and have experienced the conection. I now understand my direction. For this simple project have linked me to scores of families who lay seperated and isolated due to the ignorance of not knowing themselves. I hope to bring a type of renaissance to my family. I hope to spark interest and excitment amongst the family which I have found. And hopefully, with that, we will become a family not just linked by our last name however, link via stories, history and a common cause of making a difference.

Amazingly, all of this started with just one name. Then one name connected to another, then another and yet another. As a result, this family tree thingy morphed into this beautiful google eyed monster with limbs stretching all over the place. I am still amazed at how much it has grown. I shutter to think of the possibilities; especially if those who I have invited to take part, do in deed take the opportunity to participate. So much history and stories can be shared. So many family can be connected and reacquainted. But I guess we all must wait and see.

  1. Another Cuz says:

Do you ACTUALLY think that our relatives lay in isolation due to a lack interest or ignorance of their personal history?

  2. CAN says:

    Hello Cuz,
how come you did not identify yourself. Nonetheless, thanks for responding. On both sides of my family tree: the Allens and in particular the Newrys, I find that each family is a clan unto itself. Each clan just takes care of their immediate relatives and their immediate issues.

With the Newrys we are linked by name due to us being a small family, however, few ever take to time to investigate how is this link made; how are we family. They don’t investigate not because they don’t care, they just do not appreciate the importance of knowing. If they were aware of the importance of such links, they would actively make an effort which will result in a stronger family.
