If one analyze the history of majority day and how it came to be in 1967, we will see that infact two independents: Sir Alvin Braynen(a white man) and Randoll Fawkes(labour party) were much a hero as Sir Lynden and Sir Milo Butler. For they cast their lot in with the PLP giving them a majority of two after the election were dead lock at 18 seats apiece!

What these two men did was significant in that rumor has it that the UBP lay before these men an open cheque. So these men put Principles above the Pound!

What I have found so disconcerting about the whole affair after the PLP came to power, was how they handle the racial issue. The PLP had an excellent chance to unite this Bahamas like no other country in the world as far as race relations is concern.

Having used a white man vote to gain power it quicky forgot the lesson that Sir Alvin Braynen had just taught. Sir Alvin knew in his heart that the UBP policy was racist and dehumanizing, so he walk across the floor and help usher the Bahamas into a true democracy, only later to have the party that he help, paint those of his hue as evil and not to be trusted.

It is my fervent hope that Bahamians come to appreciate the true significance of the day and those worthy of praise, not only those of the darker hue.

If we are gonna teach history, let us teach the FULL history. And let the chips fall where they may. God bless the Bahamas!

in order for us as Bahamian to fully appreciate the day…we may have to change the name of the Day…the term Majority Rule day, as conotations of the majority (blacks) are over the minority (whites). This is why few white turn out to such celebrations…

I say name it “Democracy day”

It began this people’s march towards self-determination and as such should be celebrated extensively. The result of course being that Bahamians might value more the freedom and country that they have now.
I think that for varying reasons talk about this day and its celebration have made certain people feel marginalized and it incorrectly has been remembered as the day the PLP won. Now, while the PLP did indeed win, I think that it should be viewed as the day an oligarchy was removed and something closer to representative democracy triumphed.
On another spiel, I think that the greatest threat to the Bahamas right now is the lack of Nationalism amongst its citizenry and this highlights the need to celebrate January 10 all-the-more.

Democracy Rule Day…
Wow?
I am sure if Majority Rule Day is changed to Democracy Rule Day more persons of the other complexion would attend. But I am sure the name change will offend some people…
But that leads to another issue…is there a need to change the name of such a historical day…I know they changed Columbus Day a few times during my life, in order for it to be politically correct. Perhaps…Majority Rule Day needs to be changed to in order for it to be appealing to all Bahamians…

Anyone ever noticed how PLP oriented Majority Rule Day seems to be…in spite the fact that they trying hard to include everyone??
